Customers of Lonaconing Water Company were notified on 1/17/2023 of a problem with the water supply due to a high turbidity event and were advised to boil the water before using it as a safety measure.  We are pleased to report that remedial actions have been completed and subsequent water quality testing has shown the water quality to be within EPA guidelines for drinking water.

The Lonaconing Water Company’s three water treatment plants experienced critical failures, which resulted in a recent Tier 1 turbidity violation, a Boil Water Advisory and a system-wide water outage. The Lonaconing Water Company has been working with Maryland Environmental Services to resolve the Violation, the Boil Water Advisory, the water outage and other deficiencies found. The Town’s water customers are currently connected to the Allegany County distribution system to receive Frostburg City water. With this connection Maryland Environmental Services has shut down all three plants. The plants will stay shut down for the foreseeable future until the Town’s plant construction project for plant improvements is completed later this year and all deficiencies are resolved.

The Boil Water Advisory for the Koontz area on Old Beechwood Rd between 15817 Old Beechwood and 15001 Old Beechwood Rd, Blacksmith Ln, and Cool Mist Ln is expected to be lifted in the near future. Distribution pressure issues require installation of a booster pump to supply the Koontz tank with City of Frostburg water, on an intermittent basis, to ensure water supply and pressure are available for the 24 homes in this particular area. These residents will be notified separately by a hand-delivered letter when the Advisory is lifted for this area.

Bottle water will be provided to the residents who remain under a boil water advisory at Town Hall at 35 E Main St. Lonaconing, MD 21539 from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Proof of residency will be required.
